Games and Activities to Develop Social Skills in Kids

In life, there are some people who acquire talents more rapidly than others. It is usually the same for social skills. While some seem to develop them more naturally, others need extra help to ensure that they acquire the skills that will help them succeed.

Education specialists have developed an impressive variety of games/activities to develop social skills in kids. Here are some examples

Talking about feelings
Young children have to learn how to identify their feelings. They need to understand what is happening to them. Using cartoon characters can be a nice way to start. Parents can use their kids’ favorite cartoons and ask them to guess how the character is feeling.

Parents can also ask their kids to draw a happy, a sad or an angry face depending on how they feel. Preschool kids enjoy this game. It is simple, does not require any special equipment and represents a great opportunity for children to talk about their emotions. Several variations exist and can be other effective games/activities to develop social skills in kids.

Finding a solution
One interesting way to help children effectively solve problems is through role playing. Parents can sit on the floor with their kids and act out different real-life situations that can happen.

For instance, it could be something like fighting over a toy or being asked to play at the park. Letting the child think about the best option is critical in this game. It leads to a discussion and helps the kids understand why one social behavior is preferred over another. It clearly shows what are the results or consequences of their decisions.

Good ole sports
Team sports remain one of the best games/activities to develop social skills in kids. To be effective though, parents need to remind kids what the goals of good sportsmanship are.

For example, a soccer game can help kids understand the importance of being a good winner. Children have to learn not to brag or taunt the losers. On the other end, they also need to learn to be good losers and avoid blaming others for the loss. Kids have the opportunity to put these principles in practice if conflicts arise.

To make this activity effective though, the teaching element must be present at the beginning and at the end of the game. At the end, parents can ask the children to give each other feedback on their behavior in a respectful and constructive way. Although many other games/activities to develop social skills in kids exist, sports are effective and fun.
